The NBA is trying out a new rule in Summer League this summer. It is called the Advance Rule. It works like this:

In the last 2 minutes of the game, the team with the ball can advance the ball to half court, like a timeout but without the stoppage of play. And it doesn’t count against the teams allotted timeouts.

Getting the ball out the backcourt and across the half court line takes skill when being pressured by a defense determined to make that difficult. This rule feels like a something that would work in a Youth League, not in a competition of the best basketball players in the world.

What's next? Bringing back the old 3-to-make-2 foul shot rule?
